International Women's Day, March 8th, 2008
Our latest e-newsletter has been launched and can be viewed in full here. Following is an excerpt.
As you may know, March 8th was named International Women’s Day (IWD) by the United Nations in 1975. Since then, it’s been recognized all over the world as a day to honour our wives, mothers, sisters, friends and colleagues. A day for women to connect, to celebrate and to be inspired by their achievements. In some places, IWD has even become an official holiday.
We’ve noticed that March is also a month when many people in the United States become particularly interested in the White Ribbon Campaign, not only to learn more about what we do, but to put on campaigns of their own.
We have also posted some information on our blog about various IWD and UNIFEM campaign activities.

TWO DAYS
Our latest e-newsletter has been launched and can be viewed in full here. Following is an excerpt.
November 25th marked the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. In Canada, December 6th is a National Day of Remembrance and Action for Violence Against Women. Two days in a year. Two days.
That leaves 363 other days where 51% of Canadian women over the age of 16 will still experience an act of physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. 363 days where the global toll of violence against women will exceed the harm inflicted on women by traffic accidents and malaria – combined.
363 days where one of the most tragic, harmful, and preventable human rights atrocities on the planet will go largely forgotten. 363 days where the White Ribbon Campaign will continue its efforts to work with men and boys on the prevention of gender based violence against women and girls.

White Ribbon Campaign Launches Blog!
Educating Men About the Effects and Consequences of Violence Against Women
In an effort to strengthen the global effort towards ending violence against women, The White Ribbon Campaign is pleased to announce the launch of its new Blog;
Our Future Has No Violence Against Women
Violence against women is one of the most serious human rights violations on the planet.
Across Canada and around the world, there is a growing momentum for organizing around men's
roles and responsibilities in ending violence against women.
"This Blog is an amazing opportunity for us to connect with people working to end gender
based violence all around the world. It allows us to respond to current affairs,
share resources and best practices, and strengthen the international network.
The ability to interact online is also a chance to be inspired by the work around the world,
and inspire others to take up the cause.", states Todd Minerson, Executive Director of the
White Ribbon Campaign.
The Blog will:
- Provide updates on activities from White Ribbon Campaigns around the world
- Host commentary and opinion pieces from advocates working to end violence against women from across the planet
- Serve as a centralized online forum for individuals to come and discuss issues
The White Ribbon symbolizes a man's pledge to never commit, condone, or remain silent about
violence against women. The White Ribbon Campaign is the world's largest effort by men
to end men's violence against women.
Started by a handful of men in Canada in 1991 on the second anniversary of the Montreal Massacre,
there are now White Ribbon Campaigns in over 50 countries around the world.
What began as an annual awareness week is now a year-round effort focusing on education and
awareness, and challenging men around their role in ending violence against women.
